medical terms

Vagina - The lower part of the female reproductive tract that leads from the uterus to the outside. It receives the erect penis during sexual intercourse, the semen being ejaculated into the upper part from where the sperm pass through the cervix and uterus to the Fallopian tubes. The vagina is essentially a muscular tube lined with mucous membrane.

Vaginitis - Inflammation of the vagina as a result of infection or deficiency in diet or poor hygiene. There may be itching, a discharge and pain on urination.

Vas deferens (pl vasa deferentia) - One of the two tubes that join the testes to the ejaculatory duct via the prostate gland.

Vascular system - The heart, blood vessels, lymphatics, and their parts considered collectively.

Vasculitis - Inflammation of a blood or lymph vessel.

Vasectomy - The cutting of the vas deferens, which is performed on both ducts, causing sterility, although the effect is not immediate.

Vulva (pl vulvae) - The external female genitalia, comprising two pairs of fleshy folds (labia) surrounding the opening of the vagina. Below them is the clitoris.

Vulvectomy - Surgical removal of the vulva. The extent of the operation depends on whether there is a malignant or non-malignant growth.

Vulvitis - Inflammation of the vulva.

Vulvovaginitis - Inflammation of both the vulva and vagina.

Wide local excision (WLE) - See lumpectomy.

Medical Term Dictionary - X
X-chromosome - The sex chromosome present in males and females, although women have a pair and men just one (with one Y- chromosome). Certain disorders, such as haemophilia, are carried as genes on the X-chromosome.

X-ray - High energy radiation used in high doses to treat cancer or in low doses to diagnose the disease.

Medical Term Dictionary - Y
Y-chromosome - The small sex chromosome that carries a dominant gene conferring maleness. Normal males have 22 matched chromosome pairs and one unmatched pair, comprising one X- chromosome and one Y-chromosome. During sexual reproduction, the mother contributes an X-chromosome, but the father contributes an X or Y-chromosome. XX produces a female offspring and XY a male.
